The National lists their 10 most overrated literary classics. While I don’t agree with most of this list, I do like their suggestions on what to read instead.

I agree— skip Henry James and go straight to Edith Wharton! “The Other Two” is an amazing short story!

If I were still in high school, I would agree with you. I am finishing up my American Lit requirement this quarter and I have a new appreciation for American writers. The biggest reason why I think American writers ‘suck’ is because American’s do not appreciate literature like European countries do. Ireland has 4 authors who have been awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature. That is an insane number for such a small country! And Ireland has huge pride in the literature that has been produced in and about their land.
